statement of purpose

Washington Montessori School is an independent, coeducational, elementary day school serving students from Pre-K through 8th grade, in mixed age classes, and offering programs to children and adults of all ages. The School has a special focus on developing each child’s unique capabilities. This is accomplished through a commitment to the development of self-esteem, responsibility, and independence based on Montessori philosophy, common sense, and current educational research. Washington Montessori School is a joyful, learning community that expects the involvement of families and faculty and encourages the involvement of the community at large.

Our objective at Washington Montessori School is for students to become confident, autonomous adults with a personal philosophy that includes sensitivity and respect for other people and the environment, a sense of justice, a belief in the peaceful resolution of differences, and a clear recognition of their own role in society. Since the ultimate aim of education is to contribute to effective adulthood, the School recognizes the importance of all children having the opportunity to develop the full range of human characteristics without traditional gender bias. These values also determine decisions about employment, curriculum, programs, and everyday life at our school.

Washington Montessori School is dedicated to the intellectual development of its students so that they realize their full potential and have the ability to work diligently and creatively at vocations and avocations throughout their lives. That students achieve their best and be satisfied with that accomplishment is one goal. That students gain the ability to gauge and appreciate their own worth in addition to adapting to the challenges of society is our expectation. Our highest aspiration is for Washington Montessori School students to become lifelong learners with integrity and a sense of responsibility and leadership in the world.

The School is committed to further diversifying its student population both geographically and socio-economically. Washington Montessori School admits students of any race, color, nationality, ethnic origin, or religious affiliation.
