MS 8th Grade Trip to Mexico
Date: 03/09/2008
Time: 12:00 AM
Each March during Spring Break, the eighth grade class is offered the opportunity to travel to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to participate in a community service and cultural experience. This year’s trip involved twenty-six students and six adults. The group spent their week working in villages where the local children were given the day off from school to help. The projects consisted of tree planting, playground maintenance, sidewalk masonry and painting. After work there was always time to play soccer and learn songs and dances in Spanish from the children of the village. During some of the afternoons, the group split up by gender and spent time in the local orphanages. Students had shopped for and collected hundreds of gifts for both the villages and the orphanages. It was truly exciting to see the joy on the children’s faces once they were given the gifts. One afternoon was designated to visiting an animal shelter whose goal it is to find homes for all the “street dogs” in San Miguel de Allende. Even though the schedule was full of rich activities, there was still time to walk around the city and practice Spanish by bartering at the local markets. As always, this year’s trip was wonderful and fulfilling!
