PA Outreach - Holiday Help

Date: 11/21/2009
Time: 8:30 AM

Opportunities to help the community during the holiday season:

1. Annual WMS Giving Tree:  11/30 – 12/11

The Giving Tree is back!  This year we have the names of 175 children (ages 8 – 15).  Their wishes are mostly modest -Dora dolls and trucks.  A small gift can go a long way to make the holiday season special. You can “adopt” a child on your own or with another WMS family - for some of those bigger ticket items, like MP3 Players!  Details to be posted on the bulletin board by the PA Room.

2. United Way Thanksgiving Drive (Waterbury Armory):Mon, 11/23

(1pm-6pm) The United Way is giving out produce and canned goods so that 1,000 families can prepare Thanksgiving meals in their own homes.  This is a HUGE operation and many hands are needed to make it successful.   Young children, accompanied by an adult (of course), are welcome to help sort food, break down cardboard  boxes, and turn the Waterbury Armory into a huge market in time for the main event (which is Tuesday, 11/24)!  CONTACT INFO:  The Armory, 64 Field St, Waterbury, CT (due to ongoing construction in the area, volunteers are being asked to park at he Silas Bronson Library (267 Grand Street, Waterbury)  and enter the Armory through the rear entrance.   Staff from the United Way will be there to greet and direct volunteers.

3. The Torrington Soup Kitchen:  Ongoing

The Torrington Soup Kitchen provides warm, nutritious meals to over 160 people daily (this number is up significantly from last year)!  Please consider dropping off a donation of non-perishable items (large cans of vegetables/fruit are especially helpful – they prefer you bring many cans of the same item rather than a variety of items) and even basic toiletries (tooth brushes, tooth paste, shaving cream, razors) are greatly appreciated!    CONTACT INFO:  http://www.torringtonsoupkitchen.com, 220 Prospect St, Torrington, CT; (860) 482-0130

4. Help for the Four-Legged Members of Our Community:

Christmas Bazaar to benefit New Milford Animal Welfare Society:  Sat, 12/5 at New Milford Chapin Railroad Station.  Details for this event will be posted on the New Milford Animal Society website:  http://www.animalwelfaresociety.homestead.com. Of course, the Animal Welfare Society is always in need of supplies to help care for the animals.

HORSE:  Ongoing  Dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused and neglected horses, HORSE (Human Organization Representing Suffering Equines) is a non-profit organization located in our “own backyard” of Washington, CT.   HORSE is always looking for volunteers (ages 10+) to help groom, walk, and clean up after the horses.  CONTACT INFO:  Call / e-mail Patty to arrange for an initial tour:  http://www.horseofct.org (860-868-1960)
