Get your child’s summer sizzling with Brazilian dance & music. Students will have the opportunity to learn different types of dance, try Brazilian drumming, explore Brazilian culture, and practice a little Portuguese when they participate in this lively workshop at the Montessori Cultural Camp this summer.

During the first two days campers will try out traditional dance forms and musical instruments. Capoeirais a Brazilian dance that combines drumming, music, gymnastics and self-defense moves, andmaculeleis a rhythmic stick dance that creates an amazing group sound. Sambais also intricate and energetic. All are fast paced and exuberant, with great appeal for children in this age range. After the introduction, students will choose the area that they wish to focus on for the rest of the week.

Efraim Silva, the camp instructor, is a Brazilian national capoeira champion (1988) and a Master Teaching Artist. Originally from Sao Paulo, he teaches capoeira to children and adults in the New Haven area, and has his own group, Ginga Brasileira, that performs internationally at schools and festivals. For ten years Ginga Brasileira has run an ‘artist in residence ‘ program at Washington Montessori School where it is one of the favorites for both boys and girls. It is a high-energy cultural experience with universal appeal.
