8th Grade River Study

Each year, as part of their community-service commitment, the 8th Grade Science students do a field study survey of the aquatic invertebrates in local rivers and streams. On this trip, the students collected and identified 10 different species, including common and giant stoneflies, several species of caddis, fishflies and water pennies. The data they collect is then sent to the Connecticut DEEP, where the results are used to evaluate the water quality of rivers and streams throughout the state. This year, the students are collecting invertebrates at Mallory Brook in Washington and Furnace Brook in Cornwall Bridge.
