MS Chorus Festival

FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2018

Our MS Chorus will spend the morning at WMS working with Backtrack Vocals, an award-winning a cappella group from New York City. Throughout the morning, middle school singers will work in sectionals and as a full group, focusing on singing in the a cappella style and will learn an a cappella arrangement of a particular song. They will also learn how to prepare solos for auditions and performance, experiment with elements that make a successful solo, such as singing with intention, and discuss tricks used to help with nerves. Students will also have the opportunity to play around with “beatboxing,” the technique that a cappella groups use to provide the sounds of instrumental back-up accompaniment.  Students will learn the basic sounds of beatboxing, incorporates the sounds into beats, and will be able to get up on the microphone to try out their beats, if interested.

Backtrack Vocals is an award-winning, five-person a cappella group based in New York City that explores the power of the human voice through unique vocal arrangements, tight harmonies and world-class beatboxing. The group pushes the limits of a cappella, creating impressive covers of past and present pop music, writing inspiring original compositions and daring to take on unexpected genres such as classical and electronic music.
