The acronym MAP took firm root in our school’s lexicon way back when we offered one basic Montessori After-school Program for our elementary students. By the time the program had the chance to evolve into the varied catalog it is today, MAP had already secured its place in our vocabulary. At this point, MAP has transcended its acronym status and has become our colloquialism for care beyond the traditional school day. We offer Morning MAP beginning at 7:45 a.m. and Afternoon MAP from 3 to 5 p.m. Both take place in the MAP Room, which, believe it or not, is not where we store all of our maps.
When we extended the after school program to our younger students in Lower School and Young Children’s Community on their half-day, it seemed almost automatic to name that program Wrap. Not only does “Wrap” rhyme with its sister program, MAP, but it also slightly suggests an extra layer of comfort and care for our younger students. We also appreciate the fact that the program and the day of the week it just so happens to fall on both start with a “W.” It’s not exactly an acronym nor a portmanteau, but kind of it is if you think hard enough about it. Because our YCC and LS classrooms maintain a half-day schedule on Wednesdays, Wrap is available from 11:35 a.m. to 3 p.m. for YCC and LS students on Wednesdays throughout the school year. For now, WRAP also takes place in the MAP Room though we really like the possibilities a dedicated Wrap Room would present.
